Whether dissecting Beatles lyrics or tapping out the beat to a Shakespeare soliloquy, the essence of poetry begins in rhyme and rhythm.
Award-winning poet Keith Flynn understands this better than anyone. Combining a survey of the history of poetry with lessons for making all of our words swing the way they should, this workshop is for poets who want to find their perfect melody.
Flynn shows us how to tap into the music in our head and make our poetry dance along. With an emphasis on rhythm, line structure, editing, image association, and improving the eye as well as the ear, we learn to make our poems more dynamic and have time to write, read, and receive feedback on our work. We also identify what editors are looking for when choosing a poem and receive pragmatic tips for getting our work published.
As poets, it is imperative to listen attentively to our inner voice. Make Your Poetry Swing makes sure our voice keeps up and keeps time.
$17 materials fee; include when you register.
Keith Flynn is author of The Rhythm Method, Razzmatazz and Memory, and four collections of poetry: The Talking Drum, The Book of Monsters, The Lost Sea, and The Golden Ratio. He has been awarded the Sandburg Prize for poetry, among other poetry prizes, and is founder and managing editor of the Asheville Poetry Review. keithflynn.net
